Play and Games are fundamental to learning

Games for Learning

From a very early age, kids begin to play. The act of playing can be categorized as functional, constructive or role play. All these interactions are important learning experiences. Starting from the age of 4, kids “up their game” and start to play using an agreed upon set of rules; they now use games to learn. Discipline, comprehension, negotiation, knowledge application, cognitive, sensory skills, abstraction; All of these skills are required and mediated by almost all games. The understanding of the great potential of learning games has reached the highest level of policy-makers, up to the presidential office in the US, who are promoting and advocating the field of computer-based learning games. It’s an exciting challenge for designers to make games that combine the best of gaming technology with content and game play that have educational benefits.
