Africa’s medium is the mobile phone.

In South Africa, 66% of all people have their own cell phone. This means that more people have access to cell phones than TV or radio. The majority of Africa’s population also accesses the internet with cell phones. Currently, the majority of phones are still feature phones, but the distribution of smart phones is exploding with cheaper models being available.

This “leapfrog” in adopting mobile technology in Africa has brought about many local innovations such as Kenya’s famous cell phone payment system M-PESA.

The opportunities of using mobile phones and apps for innovation in the educational sector are massive. Educational initiatives by MIXIT or CSIR (Dr Maths) have started tapping into this potential. But it feels as if we’re still only scratching the surface of what can be done. This is why mobile learning will be one of the focus areas of the Learning Innovation Design Lab.
